Westfield – The Westfield Foundation is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the Clarence H. and Florence H. VanDellen Memorial Scholarship. Jennifer Amador and Jimmy Yang will each receive $2,500 per year for four years. This young woman and young man were selected based upon multiple criteria including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community service, and financial need. Applicants are screened by the Westfield High School guidance department and selected by the Westfield Foundation scholarship committee.
Jennifer is pursuing a career in Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy NY. In high school, Jennifer was a member of the National Honor Society and a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar at Westfield High School. Jennifer plays two instruments, the cello and piano. She was the co-captain of the WHS Varsity rowing team. Jennifer worked at Camp Riverbend as a lifeguard and swim instructor this past summer. At Rensselaer, Jennifer is a member of the Society of Women Engineers, on the crew team, plays cello in the orchestra, and is an active member of the Outdoors club.
Jimmy is enrolled in the Connell School of Nursing at Boston College in Boston, MA. Jimmy is a first generation college student in his family. At Westfield High School, Jimmy was a member of the National Honor Society, the National Society of High School Scholars and a recipient of the Raymond Bailey Scholastic Achievement Award. Jimmy also was a member of the JV and the Varsity football team while at Westfield High School.
The Westfield Rotary’s Scholarship Committee also administers several scholarships on behalf of the community-based Westfield Foundation. Two top scholarships were awarded in memory of Charles and Florence Wallace totaling $15,000 each to be paid over the course of four years. The recipients are Joseph Obiajulu who will attend Princeton University and Courtney Han who will attend Rutgers University. The recipient of the $2,500 Scholarship in Memory of Chester A. Gerdes, is Liam Collins who will attend Siena College. Two Wallace $2,500 scholarships are awarded to Nicole Boretz, who is headed for the University of Central Florida and to Jason Colasanti who will attend the University of Maryland. In addition, three Linda Read Memorial Scholarships of $3,000 each were awarded to Jimmy Yang, Kristen Troutman and Katelyn Kelly, and one Read Law Scholarship in the amount of $10,000 was awarded to Christina Obiajulu.
